Understanding Net Run Rate in Cricket
A plain-English explanation of net run rate, why it matters and the assumptions used in tournament tables.
Net run rate compares how quickly a team scores with how quickly opponents score against it across a competition.
The basic idea
Calculate runs scored per over, then subtract runs conceded per over. Tournament rules specify how completed innings and rain-adjusted matches are treated.
Because one heavy win or defeat can have a large effect, teams sometimes change their approach late in a group match.
